NONFICTION NEW YORK

NONFICTION Opens Its First Store in the Americas in Manhattan's Lower East Side

Last March, NONFICTION’s journey — which began in Seoul and continued to Tokyo and Hong Kong — started a new chapter in New York City, extending beyond Asia.

Orchard Street, where the NONFICTION New York store is located, runs through the city's Lower East Side neighborhood. This historic part of the city is known for its long-standing local shops, independent bookstores, small boutiques, and distinctive restaurants and cafés.

The new store was completed in collaboration with New York-based architecture and design studio Charlap Hyman & Herrero. Their extensive and varied experienced, combined with a flexible sensibility, are naturally reflected throughout the space. At the heart of this project was the idea of building a refelctive environment where visitors can pause amid the fast-paced flow of the city, experience fragrance, and take a reprieve.

A triangular sculptural form is installed in the window at the entrance, establishing a sculptural rhythm within the space. By the window is a a fiberglass and resin light crafted by artist Minjae Kim, marking the fourth collaboration following the Tokyo, Kobe, and Seoul Hannam stores. His aluminum chairs are also placed throughout, adding a comfortable yet contemporary impression.

In the center of the store is a mahogany table built by Los Angeles-based artist Doug McCollough. Referencing the 18th century Queen Anne style, the table was designed to be long and elevated horizontally, departing from traditional proportions, and serves as the center of the space where visitors can experience the fragrances. Beside it sits an antique candleholder from the 1770s, quietly coexisting with other curated objects across different historical periods.

Within an arched structure is a sink area filled with hand-crafted tiles adorned with a black rose pattern painted by artist Pilar Almon, exclusively for NONFICTION. A pendant light inspired by the silhouette of a lotus flower softly illuminates the space, eminating a subtle presence. Drawings by artist Kwon Cheol Hwa, who has collaborated with NONFICTION since the brand’s inception, are also fixed throughout the space, facilitating the joy of small discoveries. Artworks and objects in various styles compliment one another, a response to New York’s distinctive layered urban atmosphere.

At the New York store, visitors can experience NONFICTION’s signature fragrances and a variety of body, hair, and home products that enrich everyday rituals. The exclusive fragrance tag, available only at the New York store, features Pilar Almon’s black rose illustration and contains the scent of THE ROSE, a fragrance created by master perfumer Maurice Roucel.
